The
tongue of the wise brings healing.
A mild answer turns away wrath,
sharp words stir up anger.
The
tongue that soothes is a tree of life; the perverse tongue, a breaker of
hearts.
Kindly words are a
honeycomb, sweet to the taste
Someone of understanding
keeps a cool temper.
With patience a judge may
be cajoled: a soft tongue breaks bones.
Words from the mouth of a wise man are gracious, while the lips of a fool consume him
Sirach 5:14
Do not get a name for scandal-mongering
Sirach 18:18
A fool will offer nothing but
insult
A fool laughs at the top of his voice, but
the intelligent quietly smiles.
The talk of hard-swearing people makes your
hair stand on end, their brawling makes you stop your ears.
Remember
this, my dear brothers: everyone should be quick to listen but slow to speak
and slow to human anger
God's
saving justice is never served by human anger
But give it with courtesy and respect
and with a clear conscience
