The Power of Speech

If you have been snared with the words of your mouth, have been caught with the words of your mouth…

Wise men store up knowledge, but with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand.

An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous will escape from trouble.

A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his words, and the deeds of a man's hands will return to him.

From the fruit of a man's mouth he enjoys good

A man has joy in an apt answer, and how delightful is a timely word!

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

With the fruit of a man's mouth his stomach will be satisfied; he will be satisfied with the product of his lips.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

There is gold, and an abundance of jewels; but the lips of knowledge are a more precious thing.

Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest is a faithful messenger to those who send him, for he refreshes the soul of his masters.

Honor and dishonor come from speaking, and the tongue of mortals may be their downfall.

Happy are those who do not blunder with their lips, and need not suffer remorse for sin.

A slip on the pavement is better than a slip of the tongue; the downfall of the wicked will occur just as speedily.

The wise person advances himself by his words, and one who is sensible pleases the great.

The mighty in speech are widely known; when they slip, the sensible person knows it.

The utterance of a sensible person is sought in the assembly, and they ponder his words in their minds.

When a sieve is shaken, the refuse appears; so do a person’s faults when he speaks. 5The kiln tests the potter’s vessels; so the test of a person is in his conversation. 6Its fruit discloses the cultivation of a tree; so a person’s speech discloses the cultivation of his mind.

The blow of a whip raises a welt, but a blow of the tongue crushes the bones. 18Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as have fallen because of the tongue.

Happy is one who is protected from it, who has not been exposed to its anger,
who has not borne its yoke, and has not been bound with its fetters.

Take care not to err with your tongue, and fall victim to one lying in wait.

But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

…what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.

For we all stumble in many ways If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.  3Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.  4Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.   5So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!  6And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.  7For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

8But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.  9With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; 10from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.   11Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? 12Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.
